Security Tip: Know Your Antivirus Software
|
| |
Hackers go to great lengths to disguise computer viruses and it's not uncommon for a dangerous virus to mask itself as an update to your existing antivirus software. It's important to recognize any unfamiliar prompts or warnings and take the necessary steps to ensure your computer doesn't become infected. If you receive a questionable pop-up, do not download any updates or follow any prompts to purchase software. By doing so, you could infect your computer with a dangerous virus, which can lead to identity theft, loss of data or the use of your machine to send out spam.
Here are a few simple rules to follow that will keep your computer safe:
| 1. |
Know your antivirus protection provider so you can recognize valid prompts for updates and software renewal.
|
| |
| 2. |
Keep your antivirus software current and up to date; NEVER let it expire.
|
| 3. |
NEVER use the "close" button or the "X" in the top right hand corner to close a virus warning message that isn't from your software provider. Always close these prompts from the task manager or right click on the start menu to close. If these options do not work, hard restart your computer and run a full antivirus scan.
|
| |
| 4. |
If you think your computer may have a virus, download Malware Bytes or Super Antispyware. These are great virus removal tools and they're free to use!
